My latest piece “Zuckerborg” will be released as an exclusive at this years New York Comic Con October 4-7 2018 at the DKE Toys booth. It is a 5″ custom figure on 10″ full color backer card (with figure profile on the back for those who like to read.) Only 20 pieces made (including variants.)
Mark Zuckerberg made the news for being questioned by the senate about American’s information being sold and traded to 3rd parties by Facebook. How could I resist making a figure about this important time in social media history.. It was an easy call to mash up Mark Zuckerberg with Star Trek’s infamous data enthusiasts, the Borg. If you don’t know the nerdy and ironic history of the Borg.. just google it.
Seriously though, data is probably the most wanted and valuable commodity right now. Know what information you’re giving away to big business sites such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Uber, etc. Know where your information is going, who it’s sold to and how it’s used. Google and Facebook account for most of the revenue growth in digital advertising in America. ..and knowing is half the battle!
In early 2016 I began making some work with Donald Trump after he began actually running for President. “Is this for real?” I thought. “Nah, this has to be a business move to help someone else get elected.” Then it became clear that it was a serious movement. I could tell he wasn’t dropping out. “This is preposterous. Why would anyone want such a terrible person to represent this country, our country?” His America is better than everyone state of mind combined with his Hitler level ethics and morals is just dumbfounding at this time and era.
At the time, I was working on a new piece comprised of 21 different paintings that fit together to make one six foot by nine foot piece titled, “In My American Dreams.” At the center of this collage style piece was a portrait of Trump. A floating head with hands crossed in the gun position. This imagery actually came to me in a dream where Trump won the presidential election, pushed for a greater military, and within the four year term we were starting World War Three. This image was part of a poster in the streets of New York telling Americans to join the military, similar to the old Uncle Sam I Want You posters. I didn’t know it at the time, but my regular work would halt to produce a series of propaganda art fixated on what would soon to be The President Of The United States.
I’ve never felt more compelled to make art about anything or anyone as much as I do towards Trump and his campaign. The main figure I formulated was Trump wearing riot gear, with a shield that says VIP. To me this represented his truest rapport with the citizens of this country. He fights us with his words and actions, and if he had to, I believe he would physically strike his own countrymen to rise in a greater power. The VIP shield represents his egocentric tendencies not just towards women and other ethnicities, but to all of the other counties in this world. You can see that he truly believes The United States is well above and more important than any other country in the world. I particularly had Mexico in mind the most with his build a wall movement.
I worked with my international street art crew, W.W.G. (World Wide Guerrillas) in producing hand made stencil wheat pastes that were put up around the city of New York. I still wasn’t satisfied with the societal reach and decided to make small sculptures, aka action figures of the VIP Citizen Trump to promote to a different crowd. This went over well and then began turning the wheat pastes into cardboard stand ups. This idea was to cross reference what you would normally see in stores at the mall such as movie stars and desirable figures. I then added a motion sensor where the riot gear has a walkie talkie and they say repeat actual quotes by President Trump.
I am excited where this series is going and hope to have something wonderful to share within the next two months. I want people to be angry when they see these pieces and to understand they need to fight back. It’s frustrating to see how many Americans have become complacent with Trump as the face of America and how society is actually taking steps backwards concerning racism, equality and how America could end up a fascist country. We as a society have progressed so far and I don’t want to see this terrible man unravel the woven strength of our country.
